![]() She sat slowly, looking around at the almost pod-like shape that curved around her. She was in a much smaller space than she’d imagined. After a long while, after the jaunty tune had ended and a deeper, more complex instrumental piece had taken its place, she finally came to the conclusion she couldn’t keep her eyes closed forever and opened them in a snap, getting it over quickly. Why was she afraid to? She pondered that. ![]() She could simply open her eyes and find out where she was, she told herself, but just the thought of it made her heart beat faster, her chest tighten. She wasn’t home, or anywhere that might resemble a home. Was it from a musical, maybe? Or the theme song from a movie? Over the sound of the music, she could hear a faint, steady hum, like the machinery in a hospital, and the air, slightly too cool for comfort, reminded her of institutional spaces. Did she know this song? She thought the tune was familiar, but didn’t recognize the lyrics. Panic buzzed faintly along her skin, caught her breath in her throat, and she kept very still. ![]() ![]() She lay for awhile, eyes closed, listening to it, while she tried to remember where she was and how she came to be here. ![]()

![]() ![]() And how, by the time Johnson arrived, it had dwindled into a body that merely responded to executive initiatives, all but impervious to the forces of change. Calhoun had made it the center of governmental energy, the forum in which the great issues of the country were thrashed out. ![]() Caro introduces the story with a dramatic account of the Senate itself: how Daniel Webster, Henry Clay, and John C. It was during these years that all Johnson’s experience-from his Texas Hill Country boyhood to his passionate representation in Congress of his hardscrabble constituents to his tireless construction of a political machine-came to fruition. At the heart of the book is its unprecedented revelation of how legislative power works in America, how the Senate works, and how Johnson, in his ascent to the presidency, mastered the Senate as no political leader before him had ever done. Master of the Senate carries Lyndon Johnson’s story through one of its most remarkable periods: his twelve years, from 1949 to 1960, in the United States Senate. Caro’s monumental work, The Years of Lyndon Johnson-the most admired and riveting political biography of our era-which began with the best-selling and prizewinning The Path to Power and Means of Ascent. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Audible version though? I LOVED the ebook version of this book, Cole & Silver being my fave couple and delivering the best story of the series. ![]() ![]() Most of Bone Gap’s residents are convinced Roza – much like their mother – abandoned the boys, but Finn continues to insist he saw her being kidnapped, although he can’t seem to describe the abductor. Though anti-heroes may do good things for wrong reasons, they are fundamentally flawed and their actions serve only themselves. However, as a character, the anti-hero still has an audience’s sympathy. The anti-hero may be deficient in characteristics such as courage or integrity. However, unlike a tragic hero, an anti-hero is lacking in virtues associated with heroism. As a result, these elements work together to generate a sympathetic response from the audience for tragic heroes.Īn anti-hero is also a protagonist in fiction. Finally, a tragic hero should suffer a reversal of fortune from good to bad, often leading to death or punishment that appears to be greater than deserved. ![]() In addition, tragic heroes must possess some sort of tragic flaw as part of their internal make-up or nature that makes them at least partially responsible for their own destruction.
